[Edmonton] – Delegates to the Alberta Federation of Labour convention will march to the Legislature Friday at noon to demand an end to provincial cuts to Medicare.
Three hundred delegates will march from the Chateau Lacombe to the Legislature at noon where they will hold a rally titled Medicare: Forward not Backward. Addressing the rally will be AFL President Gil McGowan, United Nurses of Alberta President Heather Smith, Noel Summerville, Chair of Public Interest Alberta’s Seniors’ Task Force, Elisabeth Ballermann, President of Health Sciences Association of Alberta, Carol Allan, spokesperson for the AFL Pride and Solidarity Committee, and David Eggen, Executive Director of the Friends of Medicare.
Another highlight for Friday include an address at 9:45 a.m. by Dave Engledow, the Field Director of the American Federation of Labour -Congress of Industrial Organizations’ Working America program -a remarkable experiment in union outreach to the general public in the United States.
Finally, U of A Professor Jerry Kachur will discuss 10 Alberta Big Shots: the Face of Corporate Alberta at 4:00 p.m.
