URGENT ACTION
Our hearts are with all of those affected by the fires in Fort McMurray, and with the first responders and front-line workers who are dedicated to protecting their communities. In this crisis, we are calling on all our union brothers and sisters to do what the labour movement does best: to offer solidarity, to work together for the good of the community, and to go the extra mile.
As this crisis unfolds, there are immediate actions that we ask our membership to take:
Donate: The Edmonton Emergency Relief Centre is in immediate need of cash donations and donations of Diapers and Baby Wipes, Toiletries, Blankets/Bedding, New Pillows, New Socks and Underwear, and Clean Clothing. These donations can be brought to Edmonton Emergency Relief Services (10255 104 Street, Edmonton). Red Cross is accepting cash donations at this LINK.
Volunteer: Volunteers needed in Edmonton to receive, sort and stockpile donations and people will be needed to work three phone Lines. To volunteer and help out the victims of the Fort McMurray Wildfire contact Edmonton Emergency Relief at 780-428-4422 or contact cinhac@shaw.ca.
Provide Accommodations: Unifor is coordinating accommodations for their members who have been displaced by the fire, and asking for those who have a spare room, trailer or other lodging, to please contact their Alberta office at 780-448-5865, Toll Free 1-800-890-9608 or alberta@unifor.org.
Over the next weeks, we can turn our attention to rebuilding, but in the first few days of this crisis, we must focus on ensuring that people are safe, and on ensuring we do not impede the work of the first responders who are battling these blazes, and supporting the front-line workers who are helping in the aftermath.
In Solidarity,
Siobhan
