STATEMENT: AFL supports striking postal workers

EDMONTON – After a year at the bargaining table with no movement, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is striking. Their demands are beyond reasonable: fair wages, safe working conditions, the right to retire with dignity, and the expansion of services at the public post office.

AFL Secretary Treasurer Cori Longo, who was a postal worker for 10 years, expressed solidarity with workers:
“Having been on strike as a postal worker in 2012, I know what these workers are feeling. I also know the true strength and power of CUPW. We’ve never been afraid of a fight. In fact, we as postal workers know the only way to get the best collective agreement is by going on strike. Withdrawing our labour is a fundamental right of workers, and the AFL will always fight to have this right upheld. See you on the picket line!”

The Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) stands with every worker taking action for better wages and working conditions. Every worker should have the right to free and fair collective bargaining and strikes are a part of that process.
