Workers mourn agricultural fatalities

Labour representatives commemorate 112 needless deaths since 2009

Edmonton – Labour activists from all over Alberta, and from all sectors of the economy will commemorate the deaths of workers some of whose lives might have been saved had Bill 6 been introduced earlier.

At an event at Commonwealth Community Centre at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 7, representatives of member unions of the Alberta Federation of Labour will discard 112 pairs of work gloves, representing each of the 112 people who have died in a workplace accident on an Alberta Farm since 2009.

“The debate about Bill 6 should be about a group of workers who have been denied their basic rights for far too long,” Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan said. “Each of these pairs of gloves represents someone whose life might have been saved if previous governments had the courage to end their exclusion from workplace laws.”
